چکیده

Object based image classification is applied to assess the upward advance of tree species in Finnish Lapland caused by the current global warming. An automated Feature Extraction Module (Fx) implemented in ENVI is used to extract the tree crowns from a digitized panchromatic aerial photograph acquired in 1947 and a false colour aerial photograph from 2003 of an altitudinal foresttundra ecotone on Lommoltunturi fell (a mountain shaped by Pleistocene glaciations). The two step Fx process included segmentation and feature classification with support vector machines with textural, spatial and spectral channels as inputs. The change in the resulted relative crown areas of Norway spruce (Picea abies) and downy birch (Betula pubenscens) were then assessed in GIS analysis, and compared to forest inventory and age data of saplings and trees. Within the last 56 years, Norway spruce has expanded uphill, in terms of distance, approximately 100 m and birch 40 to 60 m. In accordance with the birch-pine-spruce succession concept, the downy birch dominated forest-tundra ecotone stands are now replaced by Norway spruce. The treeline of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) reach the fell top (557 m a.sl.). The spruce and birch treelines reach 510 m. We did not find water availability, soil temperature nor N to be limiting factors in expansion of spruce-birch forest but a surplus of Al relative to base cations may disfavour spruce on some sites in the tundra. Primarily, the harsh winter wind-climate and spatial variability in thickness of snow cover are presently restricting the regeneration of trees on the open tundra.

Building Change Detection from Historical Aerial Photographs Using Dense Image Matching and Object-Based Image Analysis

A successful application of dense image matching algorithms to historical aerial photographs would offer a great potential for detailed reconstructions of historical landscapes in three dimensions, allowing for the efficient monitoring of various landscape changes over the last 50+ years. In this paper we propose the combination of image-based dense DSM (digital surface model) reconstruction fr...

Change detection in coral reef communities using Ikonos satellite sensor imagery and historic aerial photographs

For decades, aerial photographs have been the only source of very high spatial resolution data for coral reef researchers. With the launch of the Ikonos satellite in 1999, imagery with a 4 m spatial resolution in multispectral mode can now be combined with historical aerial photographs for change detection. We demonstrate this potential by combining two aerial photographs (1981 and 1992) and an...

Change Detection in Boreal Forests Using Bi-Temporal Aerial Photographs

Increased need for timely forest information is leading to continuous updating of stand databases. In continuous updating, stand attributes are estimated in the field after an operation and stored in databases. To find the changes caused by operations and forest damage, a semi-automatic method based on bi-temporal aerial photographs was developed. The test data were classified into three classe...

Applying object-based image analysis and knowledge-based classification to ADS-40 digital aerial photographs to facilitate complex forest land cover classification

In general, considerable human and material resources are required for performing a forest inventory survey. Using remote sensing technologies to save forest inventory costs has thus become an important topic in forest inventory-related studies. Leica ADS-40 digital aerial photographs feature advantages such as high spatial resolution, high radiometric resolution, and a wealth of spectral infor...

Drivers of rain-forest boundary dynamics in Kakadu National Park, northern Australia: a eld assessment

Understanding the causes of savanna–forest dynamics is vital as small but widespread changes in the extent of tropical forests can have major impacts on global climate, biodiversity and human well-being. Comparison of aerial photographs for 50 rain-forest patches in Kakadu National Park had previously revealed a landscape-wide monotonic expansion of rain-forest boundaries between 1964 and 2004....
